Fall. Mint Chocolate Chip. Halloween. Crazy People.

I’m spending more and more time out on my own in the city.

Every time I think I have public transportation figured out, I don’t. Every time I think I know which part of the train to be on for a certain subway exit, not so fast. And then when I do figure it out, I end up sitting next to a woman who looks TOTES NORMAL, but ends up reciting the automated computer recording in the subway car, in exactly the same automated tone, and I end up with visions of Total Recall.

“This is a World Trade Center bound E train…”

New England, I Love You (But Shhhhh Vermont, You’re My Favorite)

We took a trip before school started. It was part trip to see family, part vacation. It felt really good to pack bags, get in the car, and go away all together.

First we went to see family in Montreal. While we were there Fayez lost a beloved family member to cancer, and it was hard. When we arrived her hospital room was full of children, in-laws, grandchildren, and extended family. There was so much love there for her, so much love that she left behind. Her legacy was her faith and her ability to freely love and accept so many people. For her, family was everything.

Mama Tried. And Not Fitting.

*St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and NO where near where I went today. But isn’t she a pretty lady?

Today I was wearing sneakers, riding on a bus through Queens, and Merle Haggard was singing through my ear buds. There is almost nothing in this world more diametrically opposed than urban city streets and old school country. It doesn’t fit. As I was riding, and humming along and doing my best not to belt out “I turned 21 in prison” (because COME ON that is the best song to sing loudly to), I was struck by how much I don’t fit here. Merle definitely doesn’t fit here. But then I looked around the bus.
