Le Party

There were lots of things about this birthday party that were different from last year.

1. There were lots of kids.

2. Jane kept pulling on my elastic skirt (which could have created a definite birthday party foul) while asking, “Cupcake?” Apparently cakes are just big giant cupcakes to her.

3. That blasted light fixture. It’s got to go.

But besides my complete bias toward our electrical dining room apparatus, it was a blast.

This is my best friend Carrie, and her husband Jeff and son Jacob. Jacob and Jane are betrothed. They just don’t know it yet. Carrie and I have known each other since before puberty. She is my third sister, and she has the patience of Job.

And if you peek in the back you’ll see my sweet Meme standing in the back of the crowd. Meme made an hour trip to be at the party, and that is a pretty big deal when you’re in your late 80’s. Someday I hope Jane understands how special that makes her.

And after the party was over, I did what all health conscience parents do after their two year old had already consumed massive amounts of sugar.

I bought her chicken nuggets and listened to her sing.

Happy birthday Jane. When I was pregnant with you I listened to this song over, and over. The lyrics are for James… not Jane… but in my mind it was your lullaby  I wondered if you would be as wonderful and sweet as that song sounded.

And you are, every bit. I love you forever, and always, no matter where you go, or who you become.

You will always be my sweet baby Jane.

“Rock-a-bye sweet baby Jane,

Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose.

Won’t you let me go down in my dreams,

and rock-a-bye sweet baby Jane.”
